I love London and its hustle and bustle, but I find myself yearning for a little open air, especially in the summer. This has led me to having favourite rooftop spots dotted around the capital as havens of cocktails and views that gets me off street level.

As summer makes its presence known, more of these elevated oases are opening up and unveiling their 2018 upgrades, so I have collated some of my favourite rooftop gems in London for the coming season.

For the theme

Do not be put off by the oversized light-up gherkin. This rooftop garden does not rely on views or gimmicks, instead this large illuminated pickle is an ode to the man behind the name of the bar - one Nicholas Culpeper. The herbalist, botanist and astrologer influences not only the décor, but the principles behind the food and drinks they serve. With cucumber growing around you in the garden and the cocktail menu changing seasonally to reflect British produce at its best, this is a great stop off. Head to The Culpeper for more than a great Instagram picture, instead enjoy the ethos behind the whimsy.

For a perfect fusion

The carnival comes to London in this incredible rooftop bar. Sushisamba is inspired by flavours from Japan, Brazil and Peru and this is reflected in the menu, the cocktails and the laid back vibe. The central tree garlanded in fairy lights in the terrace is a signature for Sushisamba, but so are its incredible cocktails. Opt for something tropical like the Coconut Serviche to start dreaming of beach holidays and long summer nights or alternatively plump for the Nashi Martini for refreshing flavours and a sweet summer taste.

The views are as stunning as you would expect but this is the perfect place for unusual flavour combinations and meticulous service.

For an unusual pastime

Some things are unutterably English and this list includes two things that Skylight Bar offers – Pimms and Croquet. For Londoners missing a perfectly-manicured lawn or looking for a competitive game of Petanque, this is a destination rooftop that offers a variety of cocktails alongside the fun game element. Sip from their range of spritz as the perfect post-work aperitvo or try a twist on a cocktail classic like their orange espresso martini.

For the solid All-rounder

The Bird of Smithfield has a dining experience to suit every preference, with two bars, a classic dining room and a private dining space along with the rooftop terrace. Its carefully-crafted cocktails have been designed to mirror the seasons and are accompanied by a food menu filled with flair. Each cocktail is beautifully presented and the rooftop garden overlooks the Smithfield Market making it the perfect spot to stop and people watch.

For a touch of green

Our secret garden.. Only place to be on such a beautiful day ☀️

The rooftop bar at Coq d’Argent is all lush lawns and trailing greenery, the perfect place to relax and absorb the French-style cocktails in the concrete jungle. With incredible views of London’s skyscrapers, the white wrought iron furniture and imaginative menu seamlessly blends a Parisian street café with everything fine dining in London has to offer.

In short, the capital has a roof terrace for every occasion and getting up high and seeing the streets from a different angle – mainly with a glass in hand – is the perfect way to relax in the summer months. Whether you want to make the most of a sunny Saturday with a leisurely boozy brunch or party under the stars while the weather lasts, every Londoner should be hunting their local area for somewhere that offers a touch of alfresco.
